Air Show of Warsaw Warbird
Photo Review
Warbirds at the Warsaw, IN Airshow 2015 -
August 14-16, 2015 (Photos taken Saturday, 8-15-2015.)
This was the third year for the Air Show of
Warsaw, IN and my second visit to the event. This year the show
was extended to include flying on Sunday, but it was a shorter aerobatic
venue only with warbird flying featured only on Saturday and Friday was
an arrival day with some night show flying in the evening. For the
size show the and the surrounding population to support it, the Air Show
of Warsaw has committed to featuring an excellent selection of warbirds,
which is larger in numbers and flying time than many of the larger,
"cookie cutter" shows that exist today. This event retains the
trappings of what I would call a "good old fashioned country airshow",
and focuses on the flying and not all of the trappings of the larger,
sterile non-warbird shows. There is lots of front line dedicated
to the spectators that pay their admission and do not want to be crowded
in to small, non-choice areas because the prime viewing areas are taken
up by big sponsor tents and chalets that restrict the common spectator's
view. Just lots of grass and front line at this event.
Hopefully it stays this way.
Below are a few highlights of the warbird
flying.
Susan Dacy came over from Harvard, IL to put on her normal superb act.
And as usual she made lots of noise, generated lots of smoke and kept
the act in front of the crowd.
The show did an outstanding job in getting the Canadian Harvard
Aerobatic Team to come over from Ontario, Canada to make this into an
international event. One does not see this group in the US that
much, and it was a real treat to see them fly in the state of Indiana.
I don't think I have ever seen this team this far west of Ontario.
Starting at 3PM was the Warbird Revue, which included T-6s like this
one, PTs over various types and T-34s. The Revue was scheduled to
end after a half hour but actually went to almost 4 o'clock.
Nothing wrong with that!
B-25 "Axis Nightmare" from Ohio was one of the four featured warbirds
that flew in the Warbird Review.
The Warsaw crowd was treated to several passes by the B-25 and Corsair
flying in formation, an extremely rare event.
Also rare at airshows anymore is the B-17 Flying Fortress. But
this small show in northern central Indiana was able to fund and procure
the "Yankee Lady" for the weekend. A small show with the right
thinking!
P-51D "Lil Margaret" gave the crowd some nice fly-bys.
At the end the two fighters continued to fly after the bombers were
done. Here Al Schiffer in the Corsair starts his approach in for
another low pass.
