Warbirds at Waukegan Airport, IL -
September 7, 2013
Waukegan is always a great little one day
airshow in early September, normally the first Saturday after Labor Day.
This is the fifth year in a row I have attended as it is only a four
hour drive and the bang for the buck on warbirds in attendance and
flying to the time to drive and $10 gate admittance is high. This
year was no exception.
P-51 "Baby - Duck" belonging to the Warbird
Heritage Foundation located right across the field at Waukegan. In
all of the static photos note the clear and blue sky.
Jim Leavelle from Cleveland, OH brought in his T-6 in to do an aerobatic
routine.
Skyraider number one at the Waukegan show. "Bad News" from the
Warbird Heritage Foundation.
Skyraider number two at the Waukegan show. "Naked Fanny" owned by Able Dog
in Helena, MT.
A T-37 painted to represent an A-37.
And the Warbird Heritage Foundation's A-4. The Skyraiders, A-4,
and T-37 were going to be part of a Vietnam salute to end the show.
Once again note the blue sky.
Warbird Heritage Foundation's F-86 was on hand to perform a
demonstration.
The Flag Jump to open the show.
A favorite each year at Waukegan is Dave Dacy in his Stearman.
Each year I pick a different place to watch the show from. This
year it was right on the ramp with the F-86 and A-4 in front of me.
The thought process was that I would be close to all the engine startups
of the aircraft pictured above.
Jim Leavelle kept his T-6 down low for the length of the runway on
take-off.
Here Jim comes around the corner in his photo pass.
The Trojan Horseman were at the show. Here are three of the six
T-28s in the group in a formation pass. Note that there are now
clouds in the sky.
Vlado Lenoch flying the Warbird Heritage Foundation's P-51 Mustang.
No one has accused Vlado of not flying low enough.
Note some non blue sky.
To the north of the airport and heading towards us was a thunderstorm.
Here the F-86 does a high speed pass with the ominous gray clouds in the
background.
The Heritage Flight which was the last flying I saw at the event.
Dave Folk taxied out in his Corsair but never took off as rain,
lightning and thunder swept the field. I along with just about
everyone else left. I do not know whether the remaining acts
including the Dave in the Corsair and the Vietnam salute ever took
place. If they did there was probably not anyone there to see
them. I had a four hour drive including going back through Chicago
so I headed for home.
