Warbird Flying Showcase
Photo Review
Warbirds at the Clermont County
Airport, Batavia, OH Flying Showcase 2022 - September 24, 2022 - Photos taken
Friday, September 22, 2022.
What started out in
2020 as a way for the Tri-State Warbird Museum in Batavia, OH to reward
its annual donors with an outside flying event during the pandemic has
turned into an annual event. I was at the original Warbird Flying
Showcase in 2020, where the spectators each had a six foot by six foot
area to occupy for social distancing. With the pandemic in the
past, the Museum continued the Warbird Flying Showcase without the
social distancing. While I was unable to attend in 2021, I was
able to attend in 2022.
On this one afternoon in
September, the Museum pulls its aircraft out of the display hangars and
flies them in a nice, relaxed format. The airport is not under
waiver during the event, so there were times when the event stopped for
a few minutes to allow aircraft not associated with the event to take
off and land. Also, the aircraft flew bigger patterns than at an
airshow, resulting in a somewhat more laid back event. With the 75
degree early fall weather, it was a great way to spend the time watching
the warbirds fly.
The event was divided into three
sections. First came the liaisons and trainers.
As each liaison and trainer
landed, they taxied into a grass area that allowed the crowd to go down
and view them.
After a 15 minute break in the
flying, the second group of aircraft flew.
The C-47 was the only aircraft in
the event that did not belong to the museum. It is owned by Nicky
and Jordan Brown from the Terre Haute area of Indiana. This is the
second time they brought their C-47 to the event.
After the C-47, SNB, and TBM flew,
there was another fifteen minute break.
For as many airshows and aviation
events as I have been to, there is always something new for me at almost
each one. For this event, it was seeing this P-40 fly for the
first time. This was a long time coming for me.
The final section of the Warbird
Flying Showcase was the B-25, P-40, and P-51. After the formation
flying each aircraft gave us several individual passes.
I hope the Tri-State Warbird Museum
continues with these events. There are few places where one can go
and spend an early fall afternoon watching ten excellently restored
warbirds fly in a laid back and intimate setting.
